Sparta upheld a very strict yet strong army known as the Spartans around the 10th century BC. It is said that only men of Spartan birth were regarded as citizens. Physical fitness played a big role as only healthy and strong men were able to become soldiers. A boy was educated by the state until he was 20, then joined the army afterwards and was elected into one of the military clubs. 

I, Clavdia: Women In Ancient Rome

The book I, Claudia: Women In Ancient Rome conveys a strong point about the differences between Roman women and Greek women as well as the differences in power. Also shows how the Roman women were not liberated meaning they weren't allowed to vote or hold public office. But they could own properties, inherit estates and run family businesses. They were able to go out freely to the marketplace, and theatres and bathe in the public baths. They were not restrained to their homes, unlike Greek women.

At the moment in DVC we are doing a rendering internal. We had to design a bottle. We drew the bottle 3 times and coloured each one as different materials. They were clear plastic, solid plastic and stainless steel.

What did I like? I liked the middle bottle the best. I think the pink and purple worked well together the most.

What didn't I like? The dark blue on the first lid looks weird and the work is unfinished.

Art 1.2 Update

My next steps are to completely finish artworks that are half done and to focus on what I need to do and get them done. Also to make more artworks that link to the artist I've chosen (Sofia Minson & Shane Cotton). As well as researching the work done by Marilyn Webb.

The Diary Of Anne Frank-Play

1. How does viewing this text through a child’s perspective change the way we experience it? Explain using an example from the text. Doesn't understand the world yet so their ideas aren't fully developed unlike adults. There opinions haven't been properly formed yet. Sympathy for them.
2. How would this text be different if it were told from the perspective of an adult? How would the audience’s experience be different? More stressful. They adults are more aware of how everything is rather than the kids. Their perspective is more hopeless and and they want to survive way more than the kids do.
3. Why did the filmmaker or author decide to tell this story from a child’s perspective? Because it's also important to see the perspective from a child's point of view rather than an adult. It's also something different and it shows just how kids see things as well and their reactions to the situations/problems happening around them.
4. How are children represented in the text? How are adults represented in the text? Children were shown as selfish, naive, annoying, talkative, loud, gullible and curious. Adults were shown as selfish, thieves, fighting, more serious, semi-educated.
5. Does imagination help the young hero to cope? How so? Provide an example. Yes because it's something different and it's a way for Anne to write to someone who isn't actually visible to the eye. An example of this would be every time she writes inside her diary.
6. Does this text connect in any other ways to the other texts you have read/viewed? How so? Provide evidence and explain. Yes the way that this play has all been written can link back to Jojo Rabbit. For example they were both shown from a child's perspective rather than an adults. They were pure, innocent and ignorant. A better example would be that Jojo and Anne were both Jewish and in the end were afraid of the Nazis.

Artwork Update

Spiritual and Cultural is my kaupapa for Art. My main focus is on my family and where I'm from. Including the country I'm from to the beliefs, morals and values passed down to me. This is building me up into the person I am. The reason I chose this as my theme is because it's something I can relate to a lot and it's not only important to me but also for my family. It's also plays a huge role in my life.

My choice of picking spiritual and cultural as my kaupapa wasn't because I would enjoy it. I chose this because it this particular theme has impacted me in a way to help with building me into the person I am now. Also, it is helping me build my relationship between my culture and expanding my knowledge about where I come from and the person I am beginning to evolve into.

I have constantly been researching a lot and reconnecting with things I have lost but are now gaining back. My research has been based around things that are currently in my family in both the spiritual and cultural sides of things.

The work below is a display of wings. They're unfinished and need some adjusting as it is not quite done yet. There is also a meaning behind the reason I have chosen to do wings. It represents one of my grandparents. It's not just a pair of wings that I have drawn just because I like wings. I chose to draw this as a representation of my grandfather who had passed down the values, knowledge etc to me and my family. By this meaning it relates back into the spiritual kind of things.

Here is one thing that I've been researching on. Obviously the cross represents my religion.

Art-Update

In Art, my kaupapa is based around Spiritual and Cultural. I will mainly focus on my family and where I come from. This includes the country I'm from up to my beliefs and values that helps build me into the person I am. The reason I am choosing this as my theme is that it is important to me as well as my family and helps me identify with who I am.

I didn't pick spiritual and cultural as my kaupapa just because I liked the thought of doing it and the thought of thinking that it was an easy task. I picked this because it has impacted me in a way to help identify who I am. Also, it is helping me build my relationship between my culture and expanding my knowledge about where I come from and the person I am beginning to evolve into.

In English, we are starting to learn about connections. At the moment we are learning about connections with the film Jojo Rabbit directed by Taika Waititi.

Not as much experience compared to adults. Their innocence.

How would this text be different if it were told from the perspective of an adult? How would the audience’s experience be different?

It would have a deeper meaning compared to seeing a child's perspective and it would be more serious.

Why did the filmmaker or author decide to tell this story from a child’s perspective?

So the audience wouldn't find it so offensive. Since children have more of a pure soul, seeing something which is darker and deeper would change the way we see it. This is because we went from watching something quite humorous then later on changed into a darker theme.

How are children represented in the text? How are adults represented in the text? Children were represented how we would normally imagine them to be. For example, full of happiness and joy. Excited about every little thing they look forward to or found interesting. However, the adults were more secretive and didn't really show us what they were actually feeling.

Does imagination help the young hero cope? How so? Provide an example.

In the beginning, his imaginary friend Hitler was not only a way to help him cope but to also help him follow a certain path to get him into being a Nazi. However, over time he started seeing different people's perspectives and changed his views of how he saw everything which changed his imaginary friend into something that didn't help him in the end. For example, at the start of the movie, Hitler was giving Jojo some advice about what he should do.

Charcoal Drawings

For art I have decided to go with Spiritual and Cultural as my kaupapa. Both images I have done so far link back to parts of my family and where I originate from. The crown represents the crowning of my late grandfather who was crowned Vaeruarangi Ariki (chief) of a village in the Cook Islands called Ureia. This relates to my kaupapa as it is something which was taken seriously and runs through the family. However, only males are allowed to take the title. The second image represents the family tree on both my mum and dads side. This relates back to my kaupapa as it is somewhat links back to the spiritual side of things. So far, I have learned to try new things using both charcoal and coloured charcoal to help enhance the outcome of my work. I also learned that it is quite challenging using charcoal for the first time but later on it got a bit easier. Things I plan on doing next are finishing of the tree and starting on more artworks that are yet to come.

For my kaupapa this year, I will be focusing mainly on Spiritual and Cultural.

The reason I am choosing this as my theme is because it is something that is important to me as well as my family and helps me identify with who I am.

The media I will work with is Paint and Design.

From 1.1 I have selected two artist which are: Sofia Minson and Shane Cotton from list one, and Vincent Van Gogh and Banksy from list two.

For my kaupapa the artist in which I am interested in is Franz Marc.

An Ideal World

In my ideal world, there would be no racism whatsoever as well as no one discriminating against each other. My ideal world would be peaceful because there wouldn't be as much violence as there is now. The planet would be clean and fresh because everyone would be putting all the rubbish in bins and they would make sure no one litters.

People would accept how diverse our world is and accept those who aren't of the same culture they are. I would also do whatever I would because I want to and I'd have unicorns.

In my opinion if we all begin to recycle properly and put rubbish in the correct bins then we'll be close to making our world clean but this can't happen unless we all help out. I also think that if people start accepting others from different races then there wouldn't be as much discrimination against each other.

Why Was A Treaty Needed?

Assessment

In the year 1830, there were around 200 Europeans and 100,000 Māori living in New Zealand. The Whalers behaviour, the Missionaries’ desire to help protect Māori rights and the Musket Wars were reasons that a treaty was in need. Another contributing factor to the need for a treaty was The Declaration of Independence. 

Due to the disruptive behaviour of some of the British Settlers like the Whalers, was one of the reasons that a treaty was needed. Once the Whalers had arrived at Kororareka or also known as Russell, their attitude and behaviour had changed in which fighting and drinking had occurred. Their behaviour and attitude had changed due to them being out at sea for months at a time and the lack of entertainment while on-board. As a result of this, a treaty was in need to help calm the behaviours of the Whalers.

Missionaries had a strong feeling in helping the Māori protect their rights. This was another reason for needing a treaty. This is important because missionaries wanted to protect Māori. There was a good relationship between the two as well as the missionaries teaching Māori to read and write. The Missionaries wanted to help Māori protect their rights as they were worried for their well-being as well as them being killed or enslaved as a result of the Musket Wars. A treaty was needed in a situation like this to help the Missionaries try and help Māori protect their rights.

Another reason for needing a treaty was during the Musket Wars. The Musket Wars happened in the years 1807-1842 in which over 20,000 people were killed. Nga Puhi was the first tribe to get muskets by trading any necessities the Europeans wanted. Population and power changed within both groups. A treaty was needed to help prevent war breaking out between Māori tribes and helping control the use of muskets.

Now the final reason for needing a treaty was because of the existence of the Declaration of Independence. Interestingly, October 28th 1835 was the date the Declaration of Independence was signed. On this day 52 chiefs signed the Declaration of Independence. They signed this because the declaration was about trading with the British. The biggest impact this had was trading in legal terms and Māori gaining full power over New Zealand. However, the treaty established the laws of people living in New Zealand whereas the declaration didn’t.

This essay has demonstrated that a treaty was needed due to the Whalers behaviour, the Missionaries’ desire to help protect Māori rights and the Musket Wars. The events of the Musket Wars show that the biggest impacts the wars had on New Zealand was gaining more land, power and population. Power and population changes as well as how trading happened are two things we can learn from this topic. All these things have clearly stated reasons for why a treaty was needed.

This trait was shown in The Silent One when Jonasi hoped that the turtle he meet would
be safe. I think this trait is important because it’s good to be hopeful for things even if you
don’t believe in it.

This trait was shown in real life when the class of 10BU were laughing for no reason. This
trait is important we need some humor in our lives.

This character trait was shown in Remember The Titans when Julius and Gary worked together as a team to get the whole team to get along instead of seeing them as individuals. I think teamwork is important because there are more ideas developing and there can be some advantages and disadvantages towards it.

This character trait was shown in He Is Psychometric when Kang Geun-taek begged for forgiveness from his son Seong-mo so he wouldn’t die. I think forgiveness is important because if we hold onto something that’s happened in the past, it’ll more likely harm you more than the person asking for forgiveness.

This trait was shown in the King’s Avatar when the opposite team wanted to cheat because they knew they would lose but the captain of that team decided to play fair and square. I think fairness is important because it shows that you can grow to appreciate the things that you disliked at first.

This character trait is shown in real life when the teachers love the subject they teach even when they have a lot on their minds or dealing with the students. I think this is important because the more you stay in a subject you dislike eventually it’ll evolve in a way that will make you get more involved in that subject and maybe in the end you may enjoy it.

The deadliest volcano is known to be Mount Vesuvius located in Italy. It's considered to be dangerous because of how close it is to the cities of Naples and the towns surrounding it.

Why do we still talk about the Treaty of Waitangi?

It is apart of New Zealand's history and culture and how we have changed

My thoughts on Waitangi Day and if we still need to commemorate it each year
In my opinion, I think we should still celebrate Waitangi Day because it's apart of New Zealand's culture and heritage. It also shows how much we have evolved over the years since the signing of the Treaty.
