Metals Research

WHAT METALS ARE MAGNETIC?

Types Of Magnetic Metals
Ferromagnetic, Paramagnetic and Diamagnetic metals are the three types of metals which interact with magnetic fields. The metal that is strongly attracted to magnets whereas the rest are not is Ferromagnetic. Paramagnetic is also attracted by metals but very weakly. Diamagnetic metals repel the magnet, even though the force is very weak.
In the presence of a magnet, different materials react very differently. Ferromagnetic metals such as Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt are strongly attracted to magnets. There are some metals that are repelled by magnets. Other materials may be weakly attracted as well. Being exposed to magnets which can be magnetized by themselves occur in Ferrous metals. They'rs not only attracted to magnets.

Ferromagnetic Metals
Iron, Nickel, Cobalt, Gadolinium, and Dysprosium are the main ferromagnetic metals. The attraction is strong enough to be felt if you hold a piece of ferromagnetic metal near a magnet. They're also used to make permanent magnets. They're able to keep possession of their magnetic properties after the magnet is removed. Strongly attracted to magnetic fields.

Ferromagnetic Alloys
Ferromagnetic alloys are alloys such as steel that contains ferromagnetic metals within them. Steel is a combination of iron and several other metals. It's harder and stronger than iron. Due to the hardness of steel, it can retain its magnetism longer than iron. Steel will eventually lose its magnetic properties when heated to a high temperature. This will also happen with ferromagnetic metals such as nickel.

Ferrimagnetic Materials
Ferrites, magnetite, and lodestone are what is included in ferrimagnetic materials. As well as having oxides of other metals, these all have iron oxides as their main component. First discovered magnetism using lodestones. Lodestones is magnetite and are naturally magnetized. Ferrimagnetic materials are similar to ferromagnetic, but with a weaker and lower magnetic attraction. Magnetite is attracted to magnetic fields but doesn't normally become magnetized itself.

Paramagnetic Metals
When the magnet is removed it doesn't retain magnetic properties. Paramagnetic metals are weakly attracted towards a magnet. Copper, aluminum, and platinum are included in paramagnetic metals. Sensitive instruments are needed to measure the magnetic attraction. Paramagnetic substances have a much weaker and lower attraction towards magnets than ferromagnetic materials. Magnetic properties of paramagnetic metals are affected by temperature. When they're very cold aluminum, uranium, and platinum become more attracted to magnetic fields.

Diamagnetic Metals/Materials
Diamagnetic materials are repelled by a magnetic field. A repulsive force caused by an applied magnetic field that creates an induced magnetic field in them, which is in the opposite direction. In contrast, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials are attracted by a magnetic field. Materials which are repelled by a magnet such as zinc, mercury, lead, sulfur, copper, silver, bismuth, etc, are known as diamagnetic materials. They act in the direction opposite to that of an applied magnetic field. When placed in a very strong magnetic field, they are slightly magnetized. Due to the orbital revolution and axial rotation of electrons around the nucleus are in opposite directions and cancel each other are the two relatively weak magnetic fields in diamagnetic materials. Diamagnetic materials have little applications in electrical engineering due to permanent magnetic dipoles(a pair of equal and oppositely charged or magnetized poles separated by a distance) being absent in them.

Essay

The more difficult it feels to achieve becomes one of your best accomplishments in life. In
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, a memorable idea is pushing for a better world,
even though it’s difficult. This idea is shown in the blurb, where Amari was holding the scroll and
the author’s note.

The blurb of the book is “They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now
we rise. '' This is used to help the reader understand that when life gets rough, to never give up
and that you can still rise from what has happened. A similar conflict happens in Avatar: The Last
Airbender where Katara, Sokka, and Aang had it rough a few times but each time they changed
so that they would become stronger and make a difference. If we have people like this now in the
world, then we have a chance for standing up for the greater good rather than the bad.

Pushing for a better world, even though it’s difficult was shown in the scene where Amari says
“Reality told us we would fail. But again and again, we fought. We persevered. We rose. This
helps the reader understand that pushing to the fullest gives us a little nudge in the right direction
to making the world a better environment for us to live in. A similar conflict happens in the real
world, where people go out of their way to help those suffering to rise up. If only people like
Amari would keep trying to do their best to help make the world better for more generations to
come.

The author’s note of the book is “And just like Zelie and Amari, we have the power to change the
evils in the world. We’ve been knocked down for far too long. Now let’s rise. '' This helps the
reader to understand that even though we don’t have the authority to do most things by ourselves,
we as people have the power to banish the evils lurking in our world. That nothing can knock us
down. And stop us from doing what is right. A similar conflict happens in my life when bad thing
s knock me down and I still get up from what has been going on. Everyone who wishes to make a
change in the world could make it happen by taking little steps at a time.

We are all one. We have the power to change the world. Even if we fail, we could try and try again. Whatever knocks us down in life, which makes us rise afterward just proves that nothing is impossible. Pushing for a better world, even though it’s difficult is something more generations after us should look forward to.
Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.

Corrosion Experiment

SCIENCE
In science, we are investigating rusting.
Our aim is to investigate the factors that cause rusting in iron.

HYPOTHESIS
I think that the nail in the calcium chloride and water will rust the most and that oil would rust the least.

Corrosion is the process of corroding or being corroded or damage caused to metal, stone, or other materials by corrosion.

OBSERVATIONS
Saltwater rusted the most whereas oil rusted the least
  • Nail polish: Rusted at the top and the nail polish came off.
  • Oil: Didn't rust at all.
  • Saltwater: Rusted the most.
  • Calcium chloride + water: Hardly rusted.
  • Magnesium + water: Rusted a little bit.

The Life Of Victoria Hayes

The Life Of Victoria Hayes

It was a dark and stormy night.
In a small, cramped house, where I laid wrapped in an old torn blanket struggling to keep warm. As I watched the trees tossing about in the frenzied lashing of the wind, the house shook. Wrapped in my blanket, so did I. Frightened out of my wits I closed my eyes not to see or hear a thing.

It all started back on the day of April 24th, 1857. Today was the day. Finally, I had made one of the biggest decisions of my life. Now was the right time to leave this dreadful city and flee to another country. The filthiness of this place has caused pollution in the air. One thing to describe it would be unsanitary and was too overcrowded.

My name is Victoria Hayes. Twenty years ago I was born on May 22nd, 1837 in a small town called Bibury. Growing up as an only child was hard. I would have many difficulties such as going in and out of rough patches while the only thing keeping me afloat was my art. This is how I would express my feelings because I had no friends to confide in.
At the age of 18, I became a well-known gambler known to all as “MoneyBags” due to the absence of my parents. They died unexpectedly. But Did they really die that day?

One day left. 23 hours 43 minutes 20 seconds. I must get me a ticket to board the ship immediately. I need to find a way to get a ticket before the ship leaves. Suddenly, a vague memory flashes in my head. A poster which read Come along and try your luck at winning a FREE ticket. Now was my chance to get a ticket for free. Moments later I arrive at a bar called Ye Olde Mitre where it will all take part. After hours of taking part in one of the biggest poker games I have ever witnessed, I have finally won the ticket I have been waiting for. Although, I have got to say that everyone else would have had to pay £15 just for a ticket whereas I got mine for free through gambling.

As I woke the next morning, I knew that it was about time I left this city. The journey I was about to do would take at least 75 to 120 days long. I was putting myself at risk by taking the Steerage ticket, which has poor conditions.
“On aboard” shouted the captain. Not long after I boarded we parted London. The thing that was most concerning was that I had no clue on where this ship was headed but I had a fair idea that it was to a place called New Zealand. In my head, all I could think of was Oh what an unfamiliar name for a country to have. Next thing I knew, I just blacked out and the air turned black all around me. A sudden chill came over me. I woke in fear. Not knowing what it was that had awakened me.

Huge rough waves come crashing towards the ship. As if it weren’t already bad enough that there was a storm raging on outside as well. Starving. That’s what I was feeling at this very moment. I needed to eat some food. Though I must say that the food wasn’t the best but it was okay. I was that hungry that I ran to the Cabin area where food was a bit better than what we got served. I halt to a stop. Standing in the path of a wealthy man with his fiancee. He was a dreamy guy who was quiet and kind. I couldn’t say much for his fiancee as she disliked me a lot. She was the stuck up kind of person who thinks just because she’s rich that she’s better than the rest of us. Minutes later we went our separate ways keeping eye contact until I turned a corner.

Due to the lack of fresh water, I found it hard to keep fresh and clean and salt water wasn’t exactly ideal for washing even if you had the so-called “Special soap”. Generally, I would see children dying because they were vulnerable to infectious diseases such as scarlet fever, whooping coughs, diphtheria, and measles. These were some horrible things to actually see.

100 days went by while we were at sea. Not long till we make it to New Zealand but one thing was hanging over me. Who was that handsome looking man? And why haven’t I seen him in a while? Days past and I finally found out who he was. His name is Ty Westbrook and he stayed in the Cabin area. That’s why I hadn’t seen him in quite some time. I couldn’t help but think about him. On the 110th day, we crossed each other's path once more. But this time he stopped before me and we had a conversation. He whispered in my ear and said: “You dropped this the other day when you came to a stop in front of me”. It was my sketchbook. I replied with a thank you and nodded politely. The next thing I knew I asked him if maybe he would want to sit down with me some time and have a look at the things I sketched. He smiled with a yes. I walked back to my bed and at the head of my bed sat a nicely placed note that read “Meet me on the dock in 5 minutes”. In my head, I was thinking who would randomly leave a note with no name or nothing.

Left wondering who left the note I walked up to the docks. Awaiting for me to arrive was Ty. We sat down and talked about things going on. Shivers crawled up my back. I confessed my feelings about Ty to him and he felt the same. At that moment everything felt as if it was our time. We fell in love even though we didn’t really know each other that well but as long as we’re together we can have the time to get to know things about each other. His fiance found out about the affair between us and absolutely wanted me dead for it. Hours after finding out about the affair Ty’s fiance died from scarlet fever. Just as we arrived in New Zealand.

The first interaction was with the Maori people. At first, it was scary because they had no such clothes on or whatsoever. They had this traditional kind of clothing on or something like that. It was surprising to see them watch us come off the ships and onto their land. I never got to see the place I traveled a long way to see. Once we arrive in New Zealand, I stepped onto land and within a few steps, I fainted. Never to open my eyes again.

Character Strengths

This character trait was shown in Zootopia when she created her own way of being a cop.
It shows us that it is important to be creative because sometime in life we would have to be creative.
I think that this trait is important because everyone would come to a point where they would use this character trait.

This character trait was shown in On My Block when Jamal became curious about the Rollerworld money. I think that if we are curious about something we could still try figure it out because in the end we could possibly find something out of it.

I saw different types of judgment in Zootopia when Gideon Grey was judging Judy because of the dream she had to be a police officer when she’s older. I think it is important not to judge others of what they desire most because you could crush their hopes and dreams.

I saw different perspective in On My Block when Amber showed up everyone had their own perspectives about her. I think it’s important to have your own perspectives because it’s the way you look at things and how you see it.

This character trait was shown in On My Block when Jamal and Ruby stood up to Spooky about protection for Cesar. I think it’s important to be brave because sometime in life this trait would become in good use.

This character trait was shown in On My Block when they all came out with the truth about what they did. This trait is important because honesty is the best policy and some good might come back to you.

Zootopia
A character who changed in Zootopia is Judy. Judy changed from a dumb bunny to a sly
bunny.
Judy changed because she became more motivated and determined to prove everyone
who criticized her wrong.

Judy begun as a young bunny who only dreamed of following her dreams. This is
because at the beginning she was in a play where herself and other mates showed what
they wished to be when they grow up. Judy said “I am going to be a police officer”.
What the director wanted us to understand is to dream big and become whatever you
desire most.

Judy in the middle of the film became more determined to right her wrongs. This is
because she made a mistake, which was she just assumed that it was only predators going
savage because of who they are and what they used to be like. Judy said “For whatever
reason, they seem to be reverting back to their primitive, savage ways”. This helps the
audience to realize there are ways of fixing your mistakes and never make assumptions.

Judy at the end of the film became more than she had expected. This is because she
solved a case that no one else could. Judy said “Look inside yourself and recognize
change starts with you”. I think if we look deep enough into ourselves then we could
possibly change things that others are too afraid to try.

In conclusion, Judy had changed majorly throughout the movie. In the beginning, she
was a confident, young bunny who only did things for the sake of everybody else rather
than herself. At the end, she became a strong, independent bunny who accepted
everything and did things to better herself. So, she changed for the good rather than the
bad.
